Jack wakes up in a jungle. He runs toward the beach and begins to help survivors of a plane crash. Kate helps sow up his wounds. The survivors are scared to see a seemingly huge creature knocking down trees in the jungle. Jack, Kate and Charlie head through the jungle to find the cockpit. The pilot tells them that the plane was a thousand miles off course, so the rescue operation won’t know where to look for them. He is then killed by the creature as the others run away.

Sayid works on the transceiver and suggests to Kate that they head to higher ground to get a better signal before the battery dies. Jack stays behind to try and operate on the Marshall. Kate and Sayid are joined by Charlie, Shannon, Boone and Sawyer who shoots a polar bear on the trek. Jin finds sea creatures for the survivors to eat and it sparks some kicking from Claire’s baby. Meanwhile Locke teaches Walt to play Backgammon.

Sayid tells the trekkers that they shouldn’t tell the other survivors about the distress signal they heard. He doesn’t want to take away their hope. He begins to organise them to start surviving on the island. Meanwhile Jack is trying to keep the Marshall alive but his cries of pain are disturbing the other survivors. Jack and Hurley discover that Kate was his prisoner. Eventually Sawyer shoots the Marshall but it is Jack who has to finish him off. Locke helps Michael find Walt’s dog Vincent.

Wild boar take an interest in the dead bodies left in the fuselage. Jack decides that they must burn the fuselage and Claire rounds up passports to read out the names of the dead. Jack tries to cheer up Rose, who seems to be suffering from trauma after the loss of her husband. Locke suggests they hunt boar as the food is running out. Michael and Kate join him but leave when Michael is gored by a baby boar. Locke continues on and kills a boar after seemingly confronting the “monster.” Jack sees a vision of someone in the jungle which disturbs him. Shannon proves to Boone that she can take care of herself by enlisting Charlie to catch a fish and Sun takes care of Walt while Michael is away.an

Jack tries to save a woman who is drowning but can only save Boone, who tried to save her. The camp is running out of water and someone steals the remaining bottles. Jack heads off into the jungle in search of his father who he keeps seeing walking around. Kate and Sayid try to find the thief which turns out to be Boone, trying to be responsible. Locke finds Jack and encourages him to follow his visions and become the leader which the camp needs. Jack discovers fresh water and his father’s empty casket.

Jin attacks Michael because he is wearing a watch which Jin was looking after for Sun’s father. The survivors don’t know this though and handcuff him to the wreckage. Sun reveals to Michael that she can speak English and clears the air. Jack takes Locke, Kate and Charlie to the caves. He realises that the caves are a good place to live and encourages the survivors to move there. But Sayid, Kate and some others refuse to leave the beach.

Charlie asks Locke for his drugs back. Locke says he will give it to him if he asks for it three times. Charlie causes a cave-in which leaves Jack trapped. Charlie volunteers to climb in and save him, but when he does the tunnel Michael dug collapses. But Charlie finds a way out and he and Jack are saved. He gets his drugs back from Locke and chooses to destroy them. Meanwhile Sayid’s plan to triangulate the position of the French woman’s signal is successful. But before he can locate it, someone knocks him out.

Sayid is looking for the person who hit him. Sawyer makes himself a suspect by beating up Boone who was looking for Shannon’s asthma inhalers. Sawyer refuses to hand them over and so Jack and Sayid torture him. He says he will tell Kate if she kisses him. She does and he says he doesn’t have the inhalers. Sayid attacks him and accidentally stabs him in the arm. Kate realises that the letter he carries around wasn’t written to him but by him. The letter is from a child telling a Mr Sawyer that he conned his parents and they are now dead. Sayid leaves the camp, ashamed of what he did.

Sayid finds a cable on the beach. He follows it into the jungle and gets caught in a trap. He is then tortured by the French woman (who left the transmission) who keeps asking him where is Alex. Sayid befriends her and convinces her to let him go. She says she killed her whole team because they became sick and that she can hear other people on the island. On his way back to the camp Sayid hears the whispers of people he can not see. Meanwhile Hurley tries to help everyone relax by building a golf course. While Michael is playing Walt finds Locke and asks if he can teach him how to use a knife.

Claire is having bad nightmares and then claims she was attacked by someone. Hurley starts a census in order to help keep track of people. Jack suspects that no one attacked her and when he tells her she rushes off to the beach. But on the way she starts having contractions and Charlie tells Ethan to go get Jack. Charlie and Claire work out that perhaps the psychic who gave Claire the ticket to L.A. had known about the crash. Sayid returns to tell Jack that they are not alone on the island. Hurley cross references the census with the flight manifest and discovers that Ethan wasn’t on the plane. Ethan then approaches Claire and Charlie in the jungle.

Jack races after Claire and Charlie, ignoring Locke’s suggestion of a search party. Locke, Kate and Boone catch up with him and they split up to follow the tracks. Jack is beaten up by Ethan but ignores his warnings and continues to follow him. He and Kate find Charlie hung from a tree and revive him. Meanwhile Locke and Boone discover some sort of metal plate in the jungle.

Kate and Sawyer discover more dead bodies from the crash, at the bottom of a lake. Kate discovers the Marshall’s case there. Sawyer takes it but can’t open it and she goes to great efforts to steal it back. She goes to Jack for help but tries to deceive him too. He opens the case and we find that a toy plane is all she was after. She says it belonged to the man she killed. Sayid enlists Shannon’s help in deciphering Rousseau’s writing while Rose tries to cheer up Charlie.

Boone wants to tell Shannon about the hatch which he and Locke have found. Locke knocks him out and ties him up. He puts some paste on his wound and Boone hallucinates that Shannon is killed by the monster. When he discovers it wasn’t real, Locke asks how it made him feel and he says “relieved.” Hurley needs some fish in his diet and so follows Jin hoping to learn how to catch them for himself. Sun begins planting a garden and Kate discovers that she can speak English. Jack and Sayid share their suspicions about Locke.

Michael forbids Walt from spending time with Locke. He announces his intention of building a raft but Walt disappears. Locke helps track him down and he is being attacked by a polar bear. They rescue him and Michael shows him the box of letters he sent him over the years. Walt’s mother hadn’t shown them to Walt. Charlie tracks down Claire’s diary and she stumbles back to the survivors.

Sawyer wakes up to find a boar in his tent. The boar later attacks him as well. He heads off for revenge and Kate joins him. The boar further antagonises him but when he finally catches him he doesn’t kill him. Charlie appears to be suffering mentally from murdering Ethan. Hurley asks Sayid to talk to him.

Sawyer buys a spot on Michael’s raft. Michael tries to stop a fight between Jin and Sun and gets a slap for his trouble. That night someone sets Michael’s raft on fire. Sawyer ties up Jin and drags him to the beach where Michael beats him up. Sun speaks English to stop the fight. Locke then tells everyone that Ethan’s people must have burnt the raft. Later though he confronts Walt who really did it. Jin leaves Sun and goes to help Michael build the new raft.

Michael asks Jack what the raft could use to send a distress signal. Hurley remembers that Sayid talked about Rousseau having batteries. Hurley then sees a series of numbers written on Rousseau’s papers. He heads off alone to meet her. Sayid, Jack and Charlie go after him. Her “residence” blows up when they approach and Hurley heads on alone to find her. She doesn’t know what the numbers mean but she says they were playing on a transmission which drew them to the island. She agrees with him that they are cursed and gives him a battery. Locke asks Claire to help him build something and they talk about her pregnancy. It turns out he is building her a cradle.

Sawyer’s headaches have gotten much worse. Reluctantly he seeks Jack’s diagnosis. It turns out he is far sighted and needs glasses. Locke and Boone can’t open the hatch but the Locke has a dream. The dream leads him to another crashed plane even as his legs seem to be giving out on him. Boone climbs up a cliff to get in the plane and they discover it was apparently a Nigerian drug smugglers plane. Boone makes contact with someone on the plane’s radio before it falls off the cliff and he crashes to the ground. Locke drops Boone off at the caves and heads back to the hatch. There he cries and angrily asks why the island did this just as a light comes on from the window of the hatch.

Jack operates on Boone to try and save him. Boone needs a blood transfusion and with Sun’s help, Jack gives him his blood. Boone’s leg is crushed and Jack enlists Michael to try and help cut it off. In the end Boone asks Jack to let him go. Meanwhile Claire starts having the baby out in the jungle. Kate has to deliver it while Jin and Charlie try to help. Shannon and Sayid spend the night together further down the beach.

Locke arrives at Boone’s funeral and admits it was his fault that he died. Jack attacks him calling him a liar. Kate drugs Jack to force him to get some sleep. Locke apologises ineffectively to Shannon, so she asks Sayid to do something about Locke. Sayid and Locke head out to the beach craft and Sayid questions him. Sayid tells Shannon that he believes that Locke wasn’t lying about Boone and that his death was an accident. But Shannon steals the gun key off the sleeping Jack and tries to kill Locke. Sayid stops her and she runs away from him. Sayid demands that Locke take him to the hatch.

Arzt tells Michael that he needs to launch the raft immediately to avoid monsoon season. Kate is trying to get a spot on the raft. Someone poisons Michael and suspicion falls on Sawyer, Kate and Walt. Locke takes Sayid and Jack to see the hatch. It turns out that Sun poisoned Michael by accident, she was trying to make Jin stay on the island. Walt touches Locke’s arm and tells him “not to open it” and tells Michael that although he burnt the first raft they now have to leave the island.

Danielle arrives in the camp to tell them that the “others” are coming. She says sixteen years ago she saw black smoke in the distance on the day when they took her baby. Now the black smoke appears over the horizon once more. Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley, Arzt, and Danielle head off to the Black Rock (which turns out to be a ship) to pick up dynamite. Their plan is to blow open the hatch and hide inside. Everyone else helps Sawyer, Jin, Michael and Walt set sail on the raft. Everyone says goodbye to one another before they leave.

Locke, Jack and Kate head into the Black Rock and bring out a crate of dynamite. Arzt demonstrates how to safely transport a stick of it when it blows him to pieces. Locke and Jack carefully pack up some more sticks and head to the hatch. On the raft Sawyer reads the letters which the other survivors wrote and rescues the rudder when it breaks off and begins to sink. On the beach Sayid leads everyone off to the caves. But Rousseau steals baby Aaron from Claire and heads off to the black smoke to presumably make a trade for her daughter Alex. Sayid and Charlie chase after her and come across the beach craft full of heroin.

Jack and Kate see a moving piece of smoke. The “monster” then attacks Locke and attempts to drag him down a hole. Locke begs Jack to let him go but Jack clings on and uses the dynamite to deter the threat. Hurley sees his numbers on the hatch and yells at Locke not to light the dynamite. But Locke does anyway and they blow the door off the hatch. He and Jack stare down at an incredibly deep tunnel. Sayid and Charlie retrieve Aaron from Rousseau. Michael and company see something on their radar and shoot their flare gun. Unfortunately they attract the Others who come and take Walt and destroy the raft.
