Episode 3 - Treehouse of Horror XXII

23 February 2012

Synopsis: Another three Halloween stories. "The Diving Bell and the Butterball" sees Homer become paralysed and forced to communicate by farting. "Dial D for Diddly" sees Ned Flanders begin killing people on the instructions of God. "In the Na'Vi" sees Bart sent to an alien world in an Avatar parody.

The Good: There were various ideas which worked out ok. The idea of Homer communicating only through farts was pretty gross but the writers went all the way with it to have him painstakingly construct a love letter to Marge. She is moved and then puts her hands over his butt and says "Don't say a word" which was pretty funny.

The Avatar parody was fairly solid too. It was a good use of Kang and Kodos what with them being aliens and all. I liked Milhouse not realising that everything on the planet was alive and ripping flowers from the ground and then banging his head against the tree in frustration. Bart then dispatches Chalmers in his armour suit in a clever way ("You got some schmutz on your cheek").

The Bad: As you might expect though none of these stories really went in as much depth as they could have done. The Dexter parody was particularly brief. We had just established that it was Homer rather than God giving Ned instructions and that was it. The first two parodies also needlessly borrowed from yet more parodies. Ned killed Patty and Selma by acting like Wile E Coyote and in the first story Homer turned into paralysed Spider-Man after another spider bite. When you abandon a parody to borrow from somewhere else it seems pretty clear that you have run out of ideas.

Best Joke: The pre-story story was a parody of 127 Hours with Homer getting trapped under a rock with a bag of candy next to him. Homer of course decides he must bite through his own arm to get to the candy and so goes through with the horrible act. He then looks down to see he bit through the wrong arm. That was pretty funny. Once he had gnawed himself free he found that Bart had actually replaced the candy in the bag with vegetables. It was a neat and complete story to kick things off.

The Bottom Line: Far from the worst of the Treehouse series but nothing particularly strong.
