Episode 18 - So Its Come To This - A Simpsons Clip Show

8 July 2011

Synopsis: Homer pranks Bart repeatedly on April Fools' Day and Bart looks to get even. He shakes a beer can up so much that it explodes in Homer's face and puts him in the hospital. Homer recovers the use of his legs but only then to get crushed by a vending machine. A clip show.

The Good: Clip shows are usually a tiresome episode for fans who have seen it all before. So I appreciate the writers acknowledging the obvious with the way they wrote some of the dialogue. Even the episode title points out what this is and doesn't attempt to hide it.

The Bad: Homer going to hospital is a good story for the purpose of showing clips. But it's not a great story for us as viewers. Both because it rather wastes what could be a poignant moment and because we just sat through it a few episodes ago (411). Rather like then I didn't feel many of the bedside gags were that great including Barney trying to kill Homer and then jumping out the window (a reference to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). The explosion of the beer can is a pretty flimsy way to put Homer in the hospital and certainly shouldn't have blown the roof off. I didn't see Bart getting much of a scolding either.

One clip that did not belong in this episode was Homer being sucked up to the alien spaceship (203). That was a Halloween story and not a real memory so it should not have been present. It was also presented by Marge as evidence of Homer's "coping skills" which makes no sense at all.

Best Joke: The writers cut through a lot of bull with their writing of this episode because they didn't have long to tell their story. So Bart stands near the kitchen door and wonders aloud what Homer's weakness might be. Homer walks up out of view, grabs a beer from the fridge and exclaims "Ah beer, my one weakness. My Achilles heel if you will." To make it even more obvious Homer soon adds "It's a good thing that beer wasn't shaken up any more. Or I'd have looked quite the fool. An April Fool as it were."

The Bottom Line: I never give a clip show more than 25 as I don't feel I can compare it to new material. The new material present was pretty average.
