With the end of the school year approaching Bart needs a C average or Homer won't let him go to Kamp Krusty. He fails but Homer lets him and Lisa go anyway. Once there they discover that the Camp is a fraud. Krusty is off spending his Summer at Wimbledon while Mr Black exploits the children for cheap labour and feeds them gruel. Bart's faith in Krusty keeps him quiet until he snaps and leads a rebellion. Meanwhile back in Springfield Marge and Homer are having a much happier time without the kids around.

Marge auditions for a local production of a musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire. Homer is particularly insensitive about her efforts and her beaten-down psyche lands her the part of Blanche. Homer decides to stay home from church on a particularly cold Sunday morning. While Marge, the children and the congregation freeze, Homer has the best day of his life. He vows never to go to church again and a visit from God (in a dream) affirms this decision. Marge is increasingly worried about Homer and the affect his behaviour is having on the children. The Flanders family also get involved in trying to win him back. Homer refuses to relent though and while snoozing the next Sunday he accidentally sets fire to the house.

At a school fair a caricaturist draws Lisa in an unflattering way and her self confidence plunges. At the same fair Homer wins a ride on the Duff blimp. He soon trades this in for money in order to enter Lisa into the Little Miss Springfield Beauty Pageant. She works hard and performs well but still comes second to Amber Dempsey. Amber is soon struck by lightning and Lisa is called in to take over. However she refuses to be a spokesperson for the company behind the pageant - Laramie Cigarettes. She begins speaking out on social issues and Laramie scramble to get rid of her.

Surprisingly this scheme is very popular and when Barney wishes he could be as successful Homer encourages him to get out there and make something of himself. The next day Homer discovers that Barney has bought an even bigger Plow and become the Plow King. All Homer's business disappears, so when he hears that there is dangerous weather up at Widow's Peak he puts in a call to the King.

Maggie will not speak despite encouragement from the whole family. Lisa asks what her first word was and so Marge tells the story of her first year. We flashback to 1984 where a young Bart terrorises poor Homer and won't call him Daddy. He is confused and resentful of the arrival of a new sibling. Lisa however adores her brother and her first word ends up being "Bart." Following Bart's prompting she calls Homer "Homer" instead of Daddy leaving Maggie's first word to be appropriately sweet.

Homer can't afford that and so turns to less-than-reliable-looking Dr Nick Riviera. Homer's friends and family come to see him before the big day.

Sharp salesman Lyle Lanley then appears insisting that instead Springfield should have its own Monorail. Homer applies to be the conductor and it is left to Marge to keen an eye on the suspicious Lanley and expose his fraudulent practices.

Krusty is having his 29th anniversary special and Ralph gets tickets from his Dad (Chief Wiggum) and takes Lisa. Ralph ends up professing his love live on the special and Lisa rejects him. Chief Wiggum also pulled strings to get Ralph cast as George Washington opposite Lisa in a school production. On the night of the show Ralph's emotions fuel a tremendous performance and he and Lisa become friends.

Lisa needs braces just as Mr Burns tries to claw back the dental plan from his workers. Homer objects and is voted in as the Union President. Mr Burns attempts to corrupt him but Homer is too dumb to follow that logic. Burns shuts the plant down but Homer stands firm and wins the plan back. Lisa is relieved to drop her hideous cheap braces for some discreet ones the plan can now afford her.

Bart is one of them but escapes and drives Willie's tractor into Chalmers. Bart is expelled and Marge begins home schooling him. Meanwhile Lisa is miserable because she thinks that it is wrong to kill snakes.

The Osaka flu arrives through some new juicers and leaves much of Springfield feeling ill. All of the Simpsons are infected except for Marge who has to take care of them. She is stressed and tired and accidentally takes a bottle of bourbon from the Kwik-e-Mart. Apu presses charges and she is sentenced to thirty days in prison despite the efforts of Lionel Hutz. Her absence leads to riots in Springfield and she is welcomed home by a crowd.

A new ventriloquist act called Gabbo makes a big splash in Springfield and airs opposite the Krusty the Clown show. Gabbo destroys Krusty in the ratings and the show gets cancelled. Krusty is miserable and loses what little money he has left. Bart and Lisa find him on the street and come up with the idea for a comeback special when they remind him of all the celebrities he has been friends with over the years. Bart and Lisa go calling on Jonny Carson, Hugh Heffner, Better Middler, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Elizabeth Taylor.
