Homer Simpson is struggling to pay for a good Christmas for his family. Unruly son Bart gets a tattoo and all the money that fastidious mum Marge had saved is spent on removing it. Homer takes a job as a mall Santa to earn extra money. He and Bart then head to the racetrack to put his wages on a Dog named Santa’s Little Helper. Although the dog loses, they decide to take it home and the new arrival proves a much loved addition to the Simpsons family.

Struggling to complete an aptitude test, Bart swaps his paper with that of teacher’s pet Martin. The school psychiatrist declares Bart a genius and moves him to a special school for gifted children. Homer diligently tries to support Bart and the two of them grow closer. Meanwhile at school Bart struggles to keep up with his classmates and becomes alienated from his old friends. He eventually comes clean which greatly angers Homer.

Bart and his class head to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant on a field trip. Bart accidentally distracts Homer who causes an accident and is fired. Unable to find a new job Homer decides to kill himself. But Marge and the kids track him down and he finds a purpose to live – safety. He gets a sign put up on the dangerous intersection where he was going to jump and soon puts signs up all across town. He finally turns his attention to the Nuclear Power Plant. The owner Mr Burns offers Homer a new job as safety inspector to get rid of the crowd outside.

He decides to take action and books an appointment with Dr Marvin Monroe’s family therapy centre. Monroe hooks the family up to an electric generator to put them through aversion therapy.
