Episode 10 - The Pineapple Incident

25 March 2012

Synopsis: Robin heads off on a date with a millionaire. As Ted begins to over think his relationship with her, Barney suggests he does five shots. Ted does them but immediately wants to call Robin. He wakes up the next day with no memory of the night before, a pineapple by the bedside table and a girl asleep next to him. Thanks to Marshall, Lily, Barney, Carl, Robin and finally Trudy he pieces together the previous night.

The Good: In terms of using the flashback format of the show, this episode is exceptional. A simple way to keep audiences hooked to a show is to set up a mystery and slowly resolve it. But this episode does that in such an intriguing and involved fashion that you just can’t look away.

What’s also so impressive about the episode, is its simplicity. As the mystery grows deeper you might expect convoluted or unlikely events to have occurred to keep each character out of the loop of what Ted was up to. But no, at each stage drunk Ted acts as you might imagine him to do. Lily and Marshall head to bed early, Barney a little later, Carl has to close the bar. So at each stage of the evening Ted has a friend to keep an eye on his behaviour.

Ted’s behaviour seems entirely in keeping with his established traits. Before drinking he is thinking about and talking about Robin. As soon as he is drunk he wants to call her. It’s an entirely relatable and plausible thing to do. Slowly his calls become more affectionate and more demanding until he finally propositions her. Fortunately for their relationship, he accidentally calls Trudy instead.

As each stage of the mystery unfolds, the reactions of the gang are really fun. Barney’s desire to use the pickup line “Daddy’s Home” and Marshall’s theory that Carl is a vampire are nice recurring jokes. Barney’s indifference to setting Ted on fire and excitement at his sexual adventure are typically fun responses. And Marshall has the most fun reaction of all (see Comic Highlight).

Finally Robin reacts to this situation as a real person would. She asks Ted if he is ok and checks to see if their agreement to “move on” from one another is still in place. He of course acts defensive and tries to blow it off. But she points out that he obviously still cares about her or else he wouldn’t have hid Trudy from her. Trudy is understandably embarrassed and flees. Very good writing.

The Bad: Barney suddenly goes from encouraging Ted to call Robin to trying to stop him. But from the context of the evening we can surmise that he just wants his wingman focused on his needs.

Comic Highlight: Throwing the mysterious pineapple into the story does add another layer of humour. Marshall is particularly intrigued and keeps bringing it up. After Trudy explains why and how she came by to sleep with Ted, she admits she is embarrassed and there is silence. Then Marshall yells “Damn it Trudy! What about the pineapple?”

How I rate your episode: There are few actual jokes in this episode and yet it manages to be fun and funny in a completely believable way. This is about as tightly written as a plot based episode of comedy can be. It’s a terrific accomplishment to make one drunken night such a compelling story and credit to Ted whose drunk acting was solid throughout. Excellent stuff.

  • Comic highlight for me:

Carl: So how did you guys like your shots?
Ted: I drank all five, bitch!

  • Just started watching How I Met Your Mother in my ongoing attempt to catch up with all things TV.

What a great episode! Definitely the best episode of Season 1 that I've seen so far. It's reminiscent of The Hangover (actually, this episode airing 3.5 years prior to that movie, I suppose The Hangover is reminiscent of this episode), yet so enjoying as a 22 minute sitcom episode. So far on this show the writing is pretty tight and inventive. I'm enjoying it far more than I expected...though I have a feeling that will end someday as I've caught random episodes from later seasons here and there over the years.

Anyway, very fun episode and a joy to watch.
