Episode 17 - TOW The Cheap Wedding Dress

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Chandler wants to book “The Swing Kings” for the wedding and Monica finds the dress she wants. Unfortunately she is forced to choose between the two when another woman wants the dress as well. Joey and Ross date the same girl and end up sabotaging each others chances with her.

The Good: The Monica wedding dress dilemma is quite a sweet story as she chooses Chandler’s happiness over how nice a dress she gets. It sends a positive message about her priorities and their future. In the meantime there is fun to be had as Rachel and Phoebe follow her around the wedding stores. Ross and Joey have a couple of good moments as they wind each other up.

The Bad: The bad parts of this show are usually connected with a lack of subtlety and thought from the writers. Chandler being unable to talk to Kirsten is not what he was like in earlier seasons. It is an exaggeration of his insecurity for the sake of a joke which is not very funny. Ross and Joey revealing personal information about the other to Kirsten is an opportunity for some clever writing but instead the jokes are obvious and give away that they know each other immediately. Ditto Rachel and Phoebe, whose attempts to dissuade Chandler from booking “The Swing Kings” are pathetically blatant. Lazy or poor writers mar what is otherwise a solid episode.

Best Line: (Ro) “So let’s decide on a spending limit.”
(J) “Yeah. Uh (mumbles) slice. Six dollars?”
(Ro) “I was thinking more like a hundred.”
(J) “Ok, can I borrow ninety four dollars?”

Best Friend: Monica
