Episode 24 - TOW The Proposal (1)

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Chandler shows the other friends the wedding ring and his plan to propose to Monica. The plan is ruined when Richard brings a date to the same restaurant. Ross considers if Elizabeth is too immature for him to have a future with. Rachel takes Phoebe and Joey to a charity auction and Joey mistakenly bids on a boat.

The Good: Rachel and Joey have a couple of good lines while trying to get out of the mess he created. Especially Joey missing the point and naming his boat the Mr Beaumont, instead of after him. Chandler is enjoyable when he tries to cover up his impending proposal. The Richard twist is predictable but as ever Tom Selleck plays the role very effectively.

The Bad: The idea to throw Monica off the scent is a bad one and is executed with typical thoughtlessness. Phoebe is unhelpful, unkind and unbelievable throughout. Her response to every situation is self serving or implausible. Elizabeth is dumped without any build up at all. We have spent six episodes establishing that age doesn’t matter and now without any change in Ross’ situation he changes his mind. The only conclusion one can draw is that the writers had no idea where they were going with that story. Even if they were forced to end the story against their will this is a poor excuse for a conclusion. Why should we care about any new characters they introduce?

Best Line: (C) “I was gonna do it tomorrow, you know and surprise her but now you’ve ruined it.”
(J) “We didn’t ruin it.”
(C) “Who walks into a room and asks to see a persons hands?”
(P) “Well, a palm reader, a manicurist, a hand doctor…”
(J) “Glove salesman!”
(P) “Good one.”

Best Friend: Ross
