Episode 4 - TOW Phoebe Hates PBS

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Phoebe tries to prove to Joey that there is such a thing as a selfless good deed. Rachel finds out that Monica has a new secret boyfriend who is the best sex she’s ever had. Ross convinces Emily to move out to America to be with him but on one condition: he stops being friends with Rachel.

The Good: All three of these plots are good ideas. Chandler is fun showing off when he learns that he is the best Monica has been with. Joey is good as he tries to fight his way onto camera and surprisingly effective at showing Phoebe why each deed is selfish. And Ross’ dilemma is pretty unsolvable and realistic. Emily would have good reason to be jealous of Rachel and her request is something you can imagine happening.

The Bad: Monica getting angry with Chandler is a bit pointless. He is clearly really into her and proud that he makes her happy in bed, it seems needless to have her get annoyed. The selfless good deed plot is a really good idea as it is fraught with comic potential and is a genuine ethical question. However it is not written particularly well. Everything Phoebe does is an attempt to prove Joey wrong so none of it is selfless. Also it is not selfish to do something for one reason and then feel good about it afterwards. This misunderstanding of the term selfless means the plot doesn’t make a lot of sense. You know as the viewer that things won’t work out with Emily, as there is no way they will break up the group, so you don’t end up really caring about her.

Best Line: (Ro) “I bet if I talked to Carol and Susan I could convince them to move to London with Ben.”
(M) “Yeah I’m sure your ex-wife would be more than happy to move to another country so you can patch things up with your new wife.”
(Ro) “It could happen.”

Best Friend: Ross
