Episode 12 - TOW Chandler's Work Laugh

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Monica goes to various work events with Chandler and doesn’t like the way he sucks up to his boss. Rachel confronts Monica about her relationship with Chandler and Ross starts dating Janice.

The Good: Chandler’s work laugh makes sense as does Monica’s reaction to it. It shows a nice side of them as a couple when she comes to his rescue after pushing him into not sucking up anymore. Joey is fun in his cameos throughout the show. Janice turning up is a nice twist and at least it shows Ross hitting proverbial rock bottom before being able to bounce back.

The Bad: It does make Ross look like even more of a loser than usual, which is sad. The whole secret relationship storyline plays out really badly here. It makes perfect sense for Rachel to confront Monica, but when she does Monica keeps lying. Even if she is “not ready” to talk about it yet, I can’t imagine anyone in reality continuing to lie. You’d assume that Rachel would just point out that she has been talking to Joey about it for a while now and get it over with. Instead Rachel tries to be nice to Monica and pretend she doesn’t know. This could be touching but Monica’s flimsy excuses and her inability to see through Rachel’s obvious reaction make her look stupid. Again in the final scene Ross should know that Chandler is hiding something from him because his reaction to the apology is so over the top. It seems the writers were unwilling to let go of the secret relationship story and try here to get more laughs out of the idea. Instead they damage the credibility of Monica and Chandler as characters by having them behave so stupidly.

Best Line: (R) “Who initiated the first kiss?”
(J) “I don’t know.”
(R) “Is he romantic with her?”
(J) “I don’t know.”
(R) “Are they in love?”
(J) “I don’t know.”
(R) “Uh you don’t know anything.”
(J) “Ooh I know one thing.”
(R) “What?”
(J) “They did it right there on the couch yesterday.”

Best Friend: Rachel
