Episode 24 - TOI Vegas (2)

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Monica and Chandler make up and begin gambling. Amidst the excitement they agree to get married. Meanwhile Ross tries to make up for drawing on Rachel’s face by treating her to lots of alcohol. Joey continues to hound his “identical hand twin” while Phoebe tries to get the best of an old lady who is lurking around her slot machines.

The Good: Monica and Chandler carry their scenes off well, getting swept up in the excitement. Similarly Ross and Rachel are a lot of fun being drunk and reminding us of why they were a couple. The twist at the end that they got married ahead of Monica and Chandler is a nice surprise. At least Phoebe’s story flows from being in Las Vegas.

The Bad: However both Phoebe and Joey’s stories are completely pointless fluff. Neither comes to any conclusion or produces genuine laughs. The identical hand twin idea is ridiculous, who thought of that? It doesn’t go anywhere either making it a doubly frustrating piece of TV. Ross and Rachel’s drunkenness obviously falls from reality into very fake looking but it is forgivable as they are funny. Although this is an enjoyable season finale, the show has moved a long way from stories about the characters real lives. It has become more of a fantasy melodrama.

Best Line: (P) “Oh.”
(Ro) “What?”
(P) “That’s like the third time that old lady has won on a machine I was playing.”
(Ro) “Ah. I’ll bet she’s one of those people.”
(P) “Mole people?”
(Ro) “What? No no a lurker.”
(P) “Oh. What’s a lurker?”
(Ro) “Ok when you’re playing a machine and it hasn’t paid out, a lurker waits for you to give up and then…”
(P) “Kills you?”
(Ro) “No. They swoop in and steal your jackpot.”
(P) “Oh. How do you know about this?”
(Ro) “My nana used to do it. That’s how she paid for all my dance…karate lessons.”
(P) “Dance karate?”
(Ro) “Yes it’s a deadly but beautiful sport.”

Best Friend: Ross
