Episode 15 - TOW All The Rugby

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Ross meets some of Emily’s English friends and agrees to play rugby with them. Chandler runs into Janice again but to get rid of her tells her he is moving to Yemen. Monica finds a switch in the guys’ apartment which doesn’t seem to do anything and she goes on a quest to discover what it does.

The Good: There are plenty of jokes throughout which are funny. The stories are pleasant to watch and you are never bored.

The Bad: But this is all so stupid. This episode is actually really poor as it attacks the believability of the show in a way which drags it into Fresh Prince of Bel Air or Saved by the Bell territory. By that I mean a show which sometimes winks at its audience rather than trying to make them forget that this is a show. Ross playing rugby is stupid. There’s nothing wrong with the story but between the bad English accents, the useless looking pitch they are on and the way he joins the scrum that means reality is the only thing being kicked around properly. The Chandler story is even worse. It begins the degradation of Janice, one of the series’ best creations. Chandler’s acting is bad as he hams it up all over the place. His lies about going overseas are bad enough but then there is no conclusion. Did he go to Yemen? Did he confront Janice? Won’t she just run into him tomorrow on the street? The Monica story is just dull and doesn’t have a good conclusion either. As there are lots of silly things to enjoy here, you are forgiven for not seeing the writing on the wall.

Best Line: (C) “You know you really didn’t have to help me pack.”
(Janice) “Oh, well when you said all you were going to be doing between now and the time you leave is packing, you really didn’t leave me much choice. Did you?”
(C) “Well I thought I did but I guess I did not.”
