Episode 4 - Fire Sale

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Vince tries to charm the heads of the major studios while Eric gets involved in a bidding war over the script for “Smoke Jumpers.” Johnny goes on The View and breaks down over Jacqueline.

The Good: The Vince and Eric plot is classic Entourage. By that I mean that the main plot structure of Entourage is like a farce. This producer wants this, that actor wants that, this director loves Vince, this studio head doesn’t and so on. Ari, Eric and Vince are always bumping around between these competing forces fighting between what will be good for Vince’s career and what he really wants to do. By adding the twist of Eric’s writers we get a new dimension to throw in to the predictable arguments and twists.

It is nice to see some studio heads (Tom Rothman) being kind and friendly as it makes a nice change from the constant back stabbing. It’s also nice to see Vince accept that for now he probably isn’t a leading man anymore. It’s another important step on the road to him becoming a bit more of a rounded character.

Meanwhile poor Johnny is going through a more serious story. Even though he ends the episode drunk with no pants on, his plot is actually quite serious as he suffers through the pain of his break-up.

The Bad: Eric’s writers don’t yet have well established characters. It makes their interactions a bit less enjoyable as they seem like stereotypes. They are presented as hicks, hanging out at a shooting range making unrealistic demands. But we don’t know enough to know whether they are idiots or if they are nice guys or what. It weakens their contribution to leave them so ill-defined.

Comic Highlight: Johnny being brought out of jail by a female officer: “Another incarceration on my record but at least I’m reminded of the soothing touch of a beautiful woman.” She looks suitably unimpressed.

Victory?: It’s a really enjoyable episode to watch if you like classic Entourage. If you tune in for big laughs, luxurious locations and hot people then this may not be for you. If you like the endless politics of Hollywood studios then this is a fun episode.
