Episode 10 - Snow Job

29 March 2012

Synopsis: Billy decided not to adapt the book “Lost in the Clouds” and instead presents a new film called Silo to Dana Gordon. She and Ari are furious but Vince likes it so much that he asks Ari to get him this film instead. Eric is up in the hills helping Anna Faris on a photo shoot. Her medalling boyfriend causes problems and he eventually forces her to break up with him. When Eric returns Ari has managed to convince the network president to go with Billy’s new movie instead.

The Good: Billy Walsh has been causing a rift between Eric and Vince all season and now it seems things could become much worse. It is an intriguing and entertaining story as Vince believes Billy is a genius while Eric thinks not only has he lost his edge but his behaviour is unprofessional.

The latter is amply demonstrated here as he refuses to write the script which he agreed to. His behaviour is consistent with his character and he is entertaining as ever. But it is Ari who goes the extra mile for Vince. It’s again a fine episode for Ari who puts his own reputation on the line for his client. In many ways this episode highlights the horrible position which Ari finds himself in as a talent agent. Billy is despicably unprofessional and Vince and Johnny treat him like crap. And yet he rushes off to the studio who blame him and has to sell them the new movie even though he doesn’t know if it will be a huge failure.

With all the twists and turns going on, the real question is whether or not Eric could have stopped Vince from backing Billy. With the trip to Cannes coming up we can see where Vince’s future lies. Either Billy is a genius or Eric was right and Medellin will be a flop. By tethering himself to Billy again Vince could be setting himself up for a fall.

Eric offering Vince a cut of his Anna Faris work is a very nice touch. It reminds us of how grounded Eric is and that he knows where his success comes from.

The Bad: Where Eric and Anna end up is intriguing, how they get there is not. Anna Faris’ boyfriend Dave is a cliché in every way possible. He is a failing actor who takes out his criticism on Anna’s work, he is possessive, overdramatic and unreasonable. He even orders Eric to get him a coke and uses silly language to make him seem like the biggest loser possible. Because Entourage is trying to tell a drama story in only half an hour, inevitably the writers have to cut corners sometimes. Sadly this is one of those where they bash the audience over the head to make the point that Dave is in the way and causing Eric problems.

Comic Highlight: Not the funniest episode but you almost have to laugh at poor Ari being crapped on. He goes to Vince to explain that Billy has to be sacked and instead Vince tells him he loves Billy’s movie.
Ari: “Is he fucking with me?”
Tur: “Clouds was lacking in tits Ari, this one’s got at least four.”
Joh: “Yeah there’s a couple of things in there for me too Ari, so you and Lloyd should get on it asap.”

Victory?: Storyline wise a lot is accomplished in a short space of time. Ari and Eric are the standout characters as ever but while Billy is entertaining Dave is not.
